How merging works in Ringfort

Three copies of the same item at the same star merge on their own. What you keep, how stars go up, and why ★★★ needs a Starlight Potion.

Ringfort key art: a ring of hill forts at sunset with fire arrows arcing between them

Two questions keep coming up about Ringfort’s items: how do merges work, and do I have to pick the copies myself or does it happen automatically? Short answers: three of a kind merge into a stronger version, and yes — it is fully automatic.

The rule: three copies, same item, same star

Every item you buy from the market arrives as a base copy. When you own three copies of the same item at the same star level, they merge into one copy that is one star higher:

  • 3 base copies → one ★ item
  • 3 ★ copies → one ★★ item

That is nine base copies if you climb base → ★ → ★★ the hard way (same 3×3 idea as TFT-style auto-battlers). Copies count wherever they are — on your walls or in your stash. They do not need to sit next to each other.

Merging is automatic, not hand-picked

You never select the three copies. The moment the third copy lands (usually when you buy it), the game merges them, plays the merge effect, and shows the new star. If that merge creates a third copy at the next star, the next merge chains straight away.

If you drag one copy onto another identical copy at the same star, nothing swaps. The game reminds you of the rule, so you cannot accidentally trade away a copy you have been growing.

Handy detail: even with walls and stash full, you can still buy an item if you already hold two base copies of it, because the third merges on arrival and frees the slot.

What the merged item keeps

Some items grow permanently over a run. Ringfort does not throw that progress away when you merge:

  • Growth: the merged item keeps the highest growth of the three copies. Growth is not added together, but you never lose your best copy’s progress.
  • Growth counters with a cap (for example Wild Hunt): carried over from whichever copy had the most.
  • Enchantments: carried over from the first of the three copies that had one.

The survivor sits in the first of the three slots the game finds (walls are scanned before stash). You cannot choose the slot — and with best-growth kept, you do not need to.

The last star: Starlight Potion

Merging stops at ★★. Three ★★ copies do not merge. The only way to reach ★★★ is a Starlight Potion: pick a ★★ item and the potion turns it into ★★★. It does not consume other copies.

That is the main difference from TFT-likes, where three 2★ units still make a 3★. In Ringfort, ★★→★★★ is potion-only.

Potions are rare. They mostly turn up as an occasional option among the spoils after you win a ring, and through some events. Save yours for the item your build is built around.

Quick FAQ

Do the three copies have to be on my walls? No — the stash counts too. Can I choose which copy survives? No. The merged copy keeps the best growth anyway, so the choice does not matter. Can I stop a merge to keep copies apart? No — merging always happens. Can three ★★ items make a ★★★? No — only a Starlight Potion can. Is this like Backpack Battles crafting? No. Ringfort is three-of-a-kind auto-merge, not adjacency recipes.
